Basic Play Tips in Table Tennis

Hi, this is Jared again on behalf of Expert Village and in this section I'm going to talk about very, very basic ways to understanding how you play the game of table tennis. So, you're going to start with hitting the ball. You want to make contact with your racket. You're first going to hit your side, then you want the ball to bounce on your opponent's side. From there, they are going to hit it back to your side. It looks a little bit like this. A big part is keeping the ball in play and making sure it hits their side before it goes off your side, or hits your side twice. You can hit forehand or backhand. And in the event of a mess-up by either player, the play would stop like this, I would grab it, and depending on whose serve it is, you would start over with the same rotation we just did. Also, in gameplay, if, during the point, you hit the net, but it still goes over, the ball is still in play if it hits their other side. Now if it hits the net and goes off the edge of the table that is their point. But if the ball is still in play, and you hit it over the net, then the ball still counts. Now, in serving, if when you serve, the ball hits the net and rolls over, that is what we call a "let". And that is the same as a re-do. And you can have as many lets as you want. You can have two, three, four in a row, and you still get to keep going. Now if the ball hits the net, goes over, but doesn't hit their side and goes off the edge, that's their points. And if it hits the net, doesn't go over, stays back on your side that is also their point. So, it is only a re-do if hits the net, and it goes over on their side.
