Hi! I'm Anna Marie and I am a Canadian Olympic rower and I am here on behalf of expertvillage.com. As you can see, it is a little b it cold out here today but you can still row in this type of weather as long as the water hasn't frozen over. You just have to make sure that you are properly prepared. Tukes are a must. They will keep your head nice and warm. If your head is warm, the rest of you will pretty much stay warm. Pogies are another thing. I actually made these ones myself. They only cost $10 bucks if you are going to buy them from the store, but you can also make them really easily out of fleece with a nice little sewing machine. They will keep your hands nice and warm as you put them on the oar. You slide the oar right through there, go right through the middle and right to the end of the oar. So you can use these sculling or sweeping. Sometimes people like to wear ear warmers. If is really bright out they can wear a baseball cap with ear warmers. That might help as well. Just really important to stay nice and warm. Another good important part is the socks. Always make sure you have really warm socks when you are rowing. If your feet get cold, it is over. You may as well go in. And I highly recommend always wearing a unisuit. A unisuit if you wear underneath long tights and a long shirt, it will keep your back maybe warm. When you bend over to start rowing, it exposes your back. Again if your back gets cold, there is a higher chance of injury. Obviously, you are not always going to be rowing in the snow, so in the summer time be sure you are really prepared as well for the weather. Unisuits are really good idea because they'll actually keep your back covered up to prevent any sort of sunburn happening on your back. Also, baseball cap and sunglasses, very important to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face. Always wear sunscreen. Even in cold weather like this, if there's sun, there's still UV so keep yourself nice and protected. I've got to go inside now, I'm freezing!
