SCOTT BROWDER: Now, we're going to talk about the backhanded serve. We just hit a basic forehand serve, now we're going to talk about the basic backhand. Again, what we want to do is make sure that the ball is totally visible away from our hand on the toss. And then we're going to just come through with our backhand. Try to put a little bit of top spin on it if you can. So what we're going to do is we're going to follow through low to high and just follow through with our paddle from the backhand and the low to high will impart the top spin that we need. So we're going to follow through and just kind of get, after you've hit your shot, you got to make sure that you're bringing your paddle back in to the center position or the normal set position or you're going to be hung out dry with your hand up here and the guy burns you down the line. So again, what we want to do is be able to move the ball around. Same thing, just the basic backhand stroke, and you're moving it from the forehand court to the backhand court back and forth. And you're trying to keep it low to the net so that your opponent doesn't slam one down your throat. It's very important, especially in intermediate ping pong. You're going to see some decent players, probably, at that level and they're going to take advantage of any weakness on your serve. And again, by moving the ball around, either a forehand or backhand, you're going to keep the guy guessing. And that's what you're trying to do. You're not trying to burn the ball by the guy. You're trying to keep him guessing so that he doesn't know where the ball is going to go. And I've used it before, the trick that I've used from, my dad used to pull it on me all the time. He would look one direction and hit the ball in a different direction. And you can, you can't use it every time. You can use it once in a while. And it's usually a guaranteed point 'cause the guy is automatically thinking you're going to hit the ball where you're looking.
