How to Change Chain Rings on a Mountain Bike

If you bought a stock cross country or trail intended mountain bike, it likely came with three chain rings. Depending on how you ride, the chain rings that it came with might be the best for your application. If you're a little bit pickier, or have different ideas about how you want to use the bike, you may want to either change the number of teeth on your chain ring, or change the number of chain rings that you're using. If you tend to run into a lot of immovable objects, you might want to remove the large chain ring and replace it with some kind of bash guard, which basically saves your middle ring from being destroyed--you, it slides over, you use new hardware to bolt everything on. You may find that the stock middle ring or large ring that you have is a different size, in which case there's after-market chain rings available in basically every size imaginable that you would of course bolt up. You may find that your small ring isn't the size that you want, or that you want to remove it all together. So, in the next few steps we'll explain how to go about changing things up.
