Basic Knitting Techniques

Hi! Now we're going to talk about the knit stitch, which is the basics. Everything you're going to do, you're going to put a knit stitch I guarantee in everything you're doing. After you've cast on, one thing you want to remember is the tail that's hanging there, do not start knitting with it because I can't tell you how many projects I've had where I had a long tail and I started knitting with it and guess what. I used the tail. Had to rip it out and start with the main yarn. Here's my little main yarn. Now I'm going to do a basic knit stitch. There's different ways of doing a knit stitch. There's a European style, which put the needles up on the arms like that. I never quite mastered that. Since I'm American, I'm going to do the American style. This is all for right handed people. I have taught a left handed friend, but since that's only 10% of the population, right now I'm sticking with the rest of the 90%. Your empty needle now. You're going to slightly separate the first stitch on your needle from all of the other stitches. Then you're going to take your empty needle and you're going to put it into the front of the stitch. You're going to pass it through to the back so you're making a little X. Knitting is done into use. I'm turning it around and showing you, but when you're knitting you're probably going to want to have the needles right about here wherever it's comfortable for you. This is probably too close for most people. This is too far away, unless of course you need those little half glasses, then put on the glasses. Anyway, bring the needle to where they're comfortable for you to hold. You need to grab hold of the needles with your hand and then just take your long, not the tail, but take the yarn that's attached to your ball of yarn and just twirl it over the needle, the right handed needle. Once it's twirled over, you're going to pull it back through. You see. Now you've made a new loop. That stitch you've been working with, slide it to the end and get rid of it. You're done. You just did stitch number one.
