Learn when a Dog Needs to go to the Bathroom

Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about house training your dog. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So we are talking here about how to read the signs of your dog that tell you that they need to go out. I am going to show you a dog and tell you the sign that the dog is giving to me to show me that they do not need to go out. If you look over here at this puppy that is sleeping on the floor, I am looking at this puppy and I think okay, that is not a sign of this puppy having to go out. She is sleeping comfortably on the floor. However, if she were to wake up, stand up, or start walking around, I would take her out immediately. What are some of the signs that dogs typically give; sniffing on the ground. If you have a dog with a tail as opposed to a dog whose tail has been cropped off, sometimes the tail posture can be an indication that the dog needs to make a bowel movement. Again, that is associated with sniffing and often circling around. If you have a dog with a tail that is cropped, you can often see just a little indication in the back the way they are holding their legs that they are getting to ready and that they need to take a bowel movement. And again, that is associated with sniffing and sometimes circling. If you have an adult male dog that is not house broken or you’ve adopted him and brought him into your house, what adult males do is they lift their leg. This can be scent marking but it is also falling into the category of being un-house broken. The sign you want to look out for that and this is just not in your home but it can be if you take your dog to a pet store or any place a dog can go inside, the sign that the male is about to lift his leg and pee an it can happen very quickly once he lifts that leg is when he is sort of siding up to a vertical object and sniffing. So if you see a male dog coming and coming close in and sniffing a vertical object, that is a likely indication that he is about to lift his leg and pee on that object. You want to pay very close attention to that. It can happen very quickly especially with small breed dogs.
