Know when Your Dog Can Be Trusted Alone in the House

Hi this is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about house training your dog. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So in this short clip we are going to be talking about how you know when your dog is reliable in the house. Typically with puppies and we can apply this rule also to adult dogs, if they have not had an accident within 21 days, you can be fairly sure that they are starting to grasp the idea. If 21 days has gone by and your puppy has had access to the house and they have not had an accident, then you can be thinking all right, I can start allowing them have a little bit more access to different parts of the house. However, if your puppy is always confined in a crate and does not have access to any part of your house, 21 days is not going to be a very good rule. You do need to let the dog have access to your house; of course, very well supervised so that you know to get them in and out of the house. As they get older, again they are more capable of holding it for longer periods of time and adult dogs although they are physically capable of holding it for long periods of time, they need to get that mental idea. There are times that even though they haven’t had an accident in a long time, they might begin to have accidents. Dogs that were incompletely house broken as young dogs or young adults will often have a hard time during periods of stress. So you might find that you are moving house or if one member of the household leaves for a period of time of if a number of people enter into the household, that might be a stressful time for your dog and you might find that your dog is going to begin to have accidents even though they haven’t had any in a year. What do you do in that situation? You go back and treat them like they are puppies. You limit their access, you supervise them and you take them out frequently. This typically does not happen with adults who as puppies were very well house broken but it can happen and does happen with adult dogs who are not completely house broken or what I call incompletely house broken as young dogs.
