Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about house training your dog. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So we are going to be talking about confinement systems, different ways that you can use to confine your dog to a smaller space. The first and most typical one is a crate system and you can see right down here, there is a mesh wire crate that has been enameled in black. You can get these in a number of different sizes. You can get them in black; you can get them in wicker, in steel colors or gold colors. You can also get an airline type travel crate which is a plastic crate which will have air holes on the side and air holes in the door. It really depends on what your use is. I find that the dogs that I work with prefer this type of crate. However, I do know of dogs that prefer the enclosed plastic crate. If you are going to be traveling, then you might want to buy the crate you are going to need for traveling and use that same crate at home. This is your typical crate system and you need to make sure that it is the appropriate size for your dog. This is a good size for a small puppy or a small breed puppy and as the puppy grows, you can get the crate to be bigger. If you are going to have a large breed puppy rather than buying a series of different sizes, you can go ahead and buy a large crate. The crates have a divider in the center so that you can divide it into a smaller space and then gradually make it larger as your puppy grows. Another type of confinement system is a baby gate and this is just a very basic wooden baby gate. It can be a fairly narrow gate and this one will also slide to quite long. This gate actually comes in two pieces so there is another piece that can be attached to it. If you have a wide opening and you want to confine your puppy into your kitchen and you have a wide door between your kitchen, you can open this all the way out, attach the other piece and you have a covering for a fairly wide space. Conveniently, they also fold up fairly small and they are light. Okay, here we have “x-pen” and this is something that has eight sides and it can be opened up; I’m not going to open it up all the way up but you can get the idea, it can be opened up and put into an enclosed shape. You can either put this around the crate or you can use this to close off a space. A great thing about these things is that you can also use them to close in a space outdoors if you want to have your puppy sit outdoors for a little while. So these are three types of confinement systems that you can use when your puppy or your dog is not yet house reliable.
