Forming Clay for a Chicken Baker

So another great project to do on the wheel is called a chicken baker. If you've ever heard of a beer can chicken this is the same idea. You're going to put some liquid, beer or chicken stock, you can put fragrant herbs, anything in the middle here and then the cavity of the chicken itself sits on top of this inner cylinder. So what happens is the chicken steams from the inside from the liquid that's in this cylinder and then whatever juices come out of the chicken as it's baking will be captured in this pan here and it has handles on the side so that it's a little easier to take in and out of the oven when it's hot. Of course you're going to be using hot mits when you do it but that just gives you somewhere to grip and you don't want to this project unless you're using stoneware because earthenware in general isn't made to go in the oven, so do this project in stoneware and this particular project takes about 3 1/4 pounds of clay. So I'm going to prepare my clay. Cut off a nice big chunk with my wire tool, weigh it and what do you know, it's right at 3 1/4 pounds. So I'll just go ahead and use this piece right here. Wedge it up just a little bit to get it into shape and then pat it into a nice round ball. Now we're ready to take this to the wheel.
