A breast self examination is similar to a clinical examination except that you perform the examination yourself. A spouse can assist in the self-examination process by examining his wife's breasts for changes in any look and feel of normal breast tissue. Through breast self-examinations a man can become more familiar with the normal look and feel of breast tissue. And if he detects any abnormalities or changes he should instruct his wife to report that to her physician immediately. When a man performs a self examination on a woman he should be familiar with the way a woman's breast is comprised. Lobules such as these, and milk ducts, form a majority of the breast tissue. Fatty tissue surrounding the lobules and the ducts give them support. When a man is performing an examination on a woman's breast he will naturally feel some lumpiness. These are areas that are typically the ductal tissue. Pay particular attention when performing an examination on the woman to look for raises or lumps in breast tissue such as this, and any skin puckering such as this. A man may also feel a smooth, soft, round lump such as this which is simply a benign sac or cyst. That's very common in women. As a matter of fact, approximately eighty percent of the lumps that you may feel in a woman's breasts will be benign or non-cancerous. However, it's very important to inform the woman if you detect any changes in breast tissue, especially a lump. Let her doctor determine if that is non-cancerous. Remember, the early detection of breast cancer may save her life.
