Todays road bikes are set up with shifters that allow the rider to trim the front dérailleur slightly while the chain is in the middle ring. If one shifts to an easier gear in the back, you start to hear some rubbing in the front. The inner lever on the left hand shifter is equipped with a soft click that allows you to move that dérailleur slightly to get rid of rubbing when you are starting to approach almost a cross chain gear. Conversely you start going back down to a higher gear and you start to get rubbing you can actually move it up slightly and get rid of rubbing in that direction. The handy feature today in these bikes that have such of wide range of gears. Never the less it still pays to really mind your cross chaining. As one trim shifts, trim and down to the inner gear.
