If you are lucky enough to own a bike that pre-dates cartridge bottom brackets, it would be referred to as an open cup and cone bottom bracket. This kind of bike has it. This is a lock ring, here's your adjustable cup and one this side is a fixed cup. This is what it looks like out of the bike, the bearings, the axle, this is the fixed cup, you'd tighten that into the frames, reverse threads, tighten that down as hard as it can be, then you'd tighten this on and you'd adjust it to get it so it would run smoothly without any play and then this lock ring would hold it in place. It requires a whole panaplee of tools to do the adjustment. A pin tool for here and here, lock ring tools for this, and a fixed cup tool wrench for this side. So if you do want to get into bikes it does pay to own all of these, however, todays bikes, since so many don't come with them, it's almost a waste of money to invest in tools just to make all the adjustments on these.
"Lucky?" Are you being sarcastic? I thought square taper is outdated? I think the design is flawed? Mine is broke. Please shed some light.
