Products to Use for Feline Lower Urinary Disease

Hi! I am Dr. Adrienne Mulligan and I am the owner of Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic and I am here today on behalf of expertvillage.com to talk to you about cat first aid and administration of medications. So in treating Feline lower urinary tract disease the most important part is getting them on a diet that does somethings for the bladder. This is probably my preferred diet because it does several things. It modifies the pH to the perfect pH, so that the crystals that form based on whether the urine is alkaline or acidic, this corrects the acidity, so that it is less likely to make the crystals plus it also brings more fluid into the urine and so it makes the urine more dilute, so that crystals are not likely to form in a dilute situation. So this diet is kind of my favorite right now for this problem. Now other things that can be used and I use this often, Metacam is an anti inflammatory and it is not on label use for cats. Unfortunately many, many things that are used in animals are off label because the companies do not take the time to do everything that the FDA wants them to do to get it approved for every breed or species that we treat. So Metacam has been used in Europe for years in cats and dogs and in Canada they use this for this condition to help with the inflammation. So I do use this in most of my cats to help with the pain and inflammation going on in the bladder when their condition is going on. Then other people use something to help the mental aspect of it and the stress and amitriptyline is an anti anxiety medication and some people use that, sometimes I do, it is not the most common thing I reach for but a lot of people find it works a lot and the newest thing they have been using is actually glucosamines like people use for their arthritis. That supposedly seems to have some benefits as well. So those are some of the ways to try to treat that problem, but again the biggest thing is the right diet, consult your veterinarian and get on the right treatment.
