Cutting as Shuffling a Deck of Cards

Welcome back to Expert Village. I'm Pete Perata now we have been talking a few segments here about shuffling the cards in order to achieve randomization. Another way to achieve randomization with a deck of cards is by cutting them. You could consider this another type of shuffle though cuts are in themselves they are in category. We're not exactly shuffling. Cutting is important process that also increases the randomization of the deck. The first cut we are going to talk about is the straight cut. Straight single cut is simply taking your cards, square it up in a nice fashion. Grabbing the cards with your middle finger at the outside end, your thumb on the inside in about half way down the deck and lifting that portion up and away from the portion remaining on the table. You then place that portion down next to it, grab the remaining portion on the left, and place it on top of the portion that you just cut off. Then square up the pack and you have executed a straight single cut. Once you have a straight cut down you could get into triple cutting. A triple cut is simply a straight cut, but instead of going half way down the pack I have gone down about 2/3. I know have 1/3 of the pack resting here and about 2/3 that I just cut off. From this pack you take 1/3 down and lift it again over. So that I have three piles equally the same. The deck is now in thirds. I then can go back to the first pile I lay down, pick it up, put over to the second pile, pick up that pile, and replace that over the top of the last pile. I have now triple cut the deck.
