Adding Glass Frit to Gather for Glassblowing

Hi! I’m Jim McKelvey with Third Degree Glass Factory in St. Louis. You can check us out on the web at www.stlglass.com. Today, we’re going to learn about glassblowing for expertvillage.com. Okay, our piece has cooled down, and it’s a good time to put on some frit, but one of the things that I’m going to do before that is I’m going to make sure that my pipe is nice and cool so I can hold it at the very front. This is a good thing to do, because when you gather, the pipe is going to heat up, and the hotter that pipe is the further back you’re going to have to put that left hand. Well, putting your left hand back too far really cuts into your control, so I like to make sure the pipe is nice and cool. Now, I’m going to gather just a small gather, and I’m going to do a technique called the pull, which is described in the books and videos of our beginning glassblowing series. So, that gather was known as the pull gather, and it’s used to create a small amount of glass on the surface. I can now go in to this scoop that I’ve filled with red glass and put a layer of nice red glass on the outside of this blue bubble, so it’s going to red on the outside and blue on the inside. And if that isn’t wild enough, we’re actually going to add some orange to that as well. Now, another way to put on frit is to lay it on the marver, but here at Third Degree we don’t like to do that for a couple of reasons. One, we have a lot of people using the studio at the same time and it’s easy to contaminate the marver. The other reason is because it’s actually easier to use these scoops to get an even coating of glass, so that’s what I’m going to do. I’m just going to put some orange chunks on here. The scoops we keep under the hood so that any dust that results get sucked out of the studio, because glass dust is very harmful, you don’t want to breathe any of that.
