Preparing Gather for Frit for Glassblowing

Hi! I’m Jim McKelvey with Third Degree Glass Factory in St. Louis. You can check us out on the web at www.stlglass.com. Today, we’re going to learn about glassblowing for expertvillage.com. In addition to showing you a casing, which is that color overlay technique that I used at the beginning, I’m going to show you how to use frit as well. Frit is just ground up pieces of glass, which is what we’re going to be doing on the next reheat. We’re going to gather some glass and we’re going roll this in the frit. That’s going to do a couple of things. It’s going to put a sort of spotted look on the outside of the piece, and the inside of the piece is going to be this nice solid blue. So, I blow out my piece, but since I’m covering it with frit and I’m going to put another gather on it, I really don’t want to blow it out too thin. I just want it nice and even and ready to support a large mass of glass that I’m going to be gathering on top of it. So, all I’m doing at this point is evening a cooling the sides and getting ready for the next color application. Now we’ll let this cool.
