Common Eyeglasses Lens Care Mistakes

Now we're going to talk about common lens care mistakes, and there are a lot of them. One of my favorites is when a patient comes in, "Can I clean my glasses? Oh, I see what I can clean my glasses." They'll pull a tissue out of here and they'll start rubbing away on the lenses. Paper products are not exactly conducive to good lens care. They're going to wind up scratching your lenses. You will wind up with little circular scratches in the lens, and they will get all torn up over time if you keep on doing that. So do not use paper products. Also, another fan favorite of mine is using the favorite shirttail to clean the glasses. Well if your shirttails dirty, and it's not a hundred percent cotton, then you're going to wind up scratching your lens also. Those fibers, not being a hundred percent cotton, are going to scratch your lenses up over time. You might get away with it a few times, but over the duration of a life of a glass, of a frame, you're going to deteriorate coatings, you're going to scratch them all up. A few things that I've seen also, people who like to use All-Purpose cleaner. I didn't have a bottle of Windex with me, but I have had people use Windex to clean their glasses off. Windex has ammonia; ammonia will tear the coatings off of your glasses. You will wind up with your coatings completely stripped off of your lenses. I have even had a person tell me that they've put their glasses in the dishwasher. Not very good idea, for obvious reasons. But the more common missteps are going to be using chemical products to clean the glasses that aren't like the generic, the general spray that we talked about, and using paper products. You're really going to damage your lenses that way.
