Prepping a Mounting Gasket Surface

In this clip, we're going to talk about the proper way to remove and replace the EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, on a 1997 Ford F150. In this step, we're going to talk about the proper service procedure for prepping the engine side surface and remounting of our new EGR valve. As you can see here, there's some corrosion and old gasket material left from the previous valve. I'm going to use a razor blade and take and scrape that gasket off. You want to be careful not to damage the aluminum of your intake manifold. So scrape lightly. You can see that gasket material coming off. We have to get all that off so we get a good seal for our new EGR valve. Go ahead and continue scraping. All right. That is the proper method you're going to use for cleaning the old gasket material off. Take my EGR valve right here. What I'm going to do is set my mounting bolts in the EGR valve and slide my new gasket onto the bolts. So I've got both of them threaded in there, just like so. I can hold them in place and set my new gasket onto those bolts. Take my gloves off. You can see that the holes in the gasket are a little smaller than the bolts. So what we're going to do is screw them in, and that will hold the gasket in place so it doesn't get mis-aligned. See how the gasket is threaded down on there? That will hold your bolts in place and your gasket, and it makes the installation a lot easier, just like so. We're going to go ahead and do the other one. Right there, you can see how my bolts are held on, and the gasket is in place. It's okay to go ahead and start them up on your intake manifold. Once you have it started, I like to use just my socket wrench, swivel and extension. Set it on there so I can get a good grip on it, and thread them all the way down by hand, and torque it later with the ratchet. There's that one. We're going to go ahead and move to the studded bolt here and run that one down with the same method. Once you've got them snug, you take and flip your ratchet over to the clockwise direction. Set it back into your extension and torque the bolt. Right there and we'll go back to the front bolt. There you go. That's the proper way to prep your gasket surface, set your gasket, and remount the EGR valve.
