Medical History Interviews for Blood Donation

Hello, I'm Geoff Balenger. I'm the assistant training supervisor here at the Stanford Blood Center and the point in the donation process that we're at now is the actual medical history interview. At this point our donor has already registered and filled out the medical history form, answered the questions on the back. So what I'm going to do is go over all the questions she's answered, address any yes answers and if that goes well I'm going to perform a series of vital signs. So we'll start with the questions. The questions that we ask usually have to do with health related issues, travel and any sexual contact or sexual experiences that donors have had that may put them at high risk for infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. That is our main goal to eliminate any possible transfusion of hepatitis positive or HIV positive units. So the screening process is probably the most important process in the donation.
