Using Fluoride to Prevent Root Canal

Fluoride is one of the most important elements that we have in preventing cavities. What fluoride does is it basically strengthens the enamel. It strengthens the tooth structures and in doing so it prevents the bacteria from breaking into the tooth structure and having a foothold in creating a cavity. And fluoride comes in different forms as you know. It's in the toothpaste, sometimes in the gum, sometimes it's in the oral rinse. Sometimes it can be in a candy. But it's important to know that you need to know if your regular tap water is fluoridated or if it's not. And also if you have children, young children, babies or 1, 2 years old child. If your pediatrician prescribes fluoride tablets or fluoride drops you have to be careful not to over dose it. If you do, fluoride in a large quantity is a poison. In low, small quantity it's actually a very helpful element. So you can tell if you have too much fluoride your teeth become chalky. We call it fluorosis. It's very aesthetically not so pleasing. So in some parts of this country, like in the Rocky Mountain area the water there is naturally fluoridated. Because the fluoride element runs in the water. In some parts of the country there is no fluoride in the water but the city or the state mandates to place fluoride into the tap water. So you need to find out if there is fluoride in the water. If there is then it's more than sufficient. If there's not then you need to supplement it. But the best thing for children is to have the fluoride rinse. To use that nightly before they go to bed. And for adults, if they have a lot of fillings in their mouth or even if they don't. They want to prevent to have any more cavities or to have no cavities. Fluoride rinse is a really good adjunct to add the brushing and flossing nightly for your oral cleansing.
