When you take a look at this model, each tooth as at least one to three to two and sometimes even more, roots. Depending on the location and sometimes just out of the ordinary, some people just have more roots than normal. Each of these roots has canals in the center, meaning a hollow space and that's where the nerve tissue, the blood supply are situated. But sometimes when we get cavities, it breaks through the enamels or breaks through the root and it basically expose the nerve and when it does that, it basically breaks down the nerve and cause a great infection. And the infection for the most part, we can see it visually when there's a breakdown of the enamel or we can see it on the x-ray where at the end of the root there is basically swelling or disintegration of the bone because of the infection. Or in general, you feel the pain or there's swelling that is very very visible. And so, usually in those situations, you have to go in there and do a root canal treatment.
