Removing Lug Nuts & Tires

In this clip we're going to talk about the proper way to remove and replace worn front brake hoses on a 1991 Ford Explorer. In this step I'm going to talk about the proper placement of a jack stand, and removal of the lug nuts and tire for our front brake hose service on a 91 Ford Explorer. Jack stand is a safety device. This jack is not designed to hold the weight of the vehicle the entire time you work on it. You'd be resting your life on the thirty cent seal inside the cylinder. What you want to use is a mechanical device like this jack stand. It lifts up, just like so, it's adjustable, and this is the release for the safety catch, just like so. You can put it just about anywhere on a Ford Explorer that's sturdy. On the radius arm or the frame. Adjust it up snug right there. Now what I'm going to do is let the tension down off of my jack and it'll settle down slowly onto the jack stand. You always want to release the tension on the jack slowly so it comes down easily and settles nicely for you, right there. From there I'm going to take my four way and spin off my lug nuts. The nice thing about a four way is you get a mechanical advantage. You see how I can just spin it off instead of having to ratchet them off or just using a tire iron. Most floor jacks, if you get a good one, will come with a magnetic tray you can take and set your lug nuts on, right there. Now just do to time; salt, water, rust, things of those nature, you wheel might be stuck on. You may have to give it a stout jab with your hand or possibly even give it a little kick to break the tire loose. Alright I'm going to demonstrate the way to break your tire loose once you have all the lug nuts off. Take your hand, grab a hold of it at the top, take your palm right about here, and give it a smack on the rubber. Make sure not to hit the steel or aluminum of the rim, you'll hurt yourself. Right there. Set tire on the ground and roll it out of the way. That is the proper way to place your jack stand, spin off your lug nuts, and remove your tire.
