Hooking a Gauge Set Up to a Refrigerant Canister

In this clip we're going to talk about the proper service procedure to retro fit your vehicle's air conditioning system from R12 to 134A and recharge the system. In this step I'm going to talk about the appropriate service procedure for hooking your gage set up to your canister. What you're dealing with is pressurized refrigerant in this can. Anytime you're dealing with pressurized or spring loaded devices, safety glasses. Go ahead and put those on. As you can see if you look closely on the inside of the valve you will see a very sharp protrusion sticking out. That is what's used to pierce the seal in the top of the refrigerant can. Before you screw the gage on the can you're going to want to turn it counter clockwise to retract that screw all the way out. That will avoid accidental piercing before you're ready for your refrigerant. Once it's retracted past the sealing hose you can go ahead and seal it down on to the top of the can. Do not screw it down using the valve; you want to screw it down using the hose. Hand tight is good, right there. That is the proper method for attaching your gage set and charging hose to your refrigerant can.
