Cleaning Roses for a Rose Bouquet

After you've selected your roses, next, you'll prep the roses. When you get the roses, you'll see they have some petals that don't look so good but don't be scared because those come off. These petals are called, they're to protect the petals, they're protector petals. They're guard petals to protect the inside of the rose. Now, all you're going to do is take the petal and just pull it so it gets right off at the bottom. So, there's usually about four or five guard petals. Again, those are just to protect the inside of the rose while they're being shipped from Ecuador or wherever. So, you're just going to go through your bunch and look at the roses and just take these petals off. After you're done going through your entire dozen, you're going to take off the petals that will go below the water line on your container. So, all of these petals are going to come off. If you leave the petals on, it's a bad thing because it will cause bacteria to get into the water and then you'll have some very terrible smelling water and it won't be nice and clean. Next, you're going to take the thorns; take a knife and cut off the thorns so they don't get tangled up in the taping and the grid on the container. And one more, just take it, pull the rose leaves off. Take your knife and just strip off the thorns. You don't want to strip off the stem because that will make the rose not last as long. And that is how you prep the roses.
