Testing Engine Coolant Concentration

In this clip we're going to talk about the proper way to flush your cooling system. In this step we're going to talk about the proper way to test your coolant concentration once you've completed your flush, ran the engine for twenty minutes, and top off the radiator. What I'm going to do is use what they call a hydrometer. I'm going to stick it right the over flow jug and suck up a sample of coolant. I live in a northern state and used a seventy percent coolant mix and a thirty percent water mix. As you can see almost all the balls are floating in my gage. What this indicates is I'm good to negative thirty four degrees. You're going to want to refer to your chart on the back of your coolant to give you the specific concentration levels and the specific freeze protection. If you live in say Florida it's not necessary to use a seventy thirty mix you can use a fifty fifty and have more than adequate freeze protection. That is the proper way to use a hydrometer to test your coolant level concentration.
