Furniture is usually made out of four, principle kinds of wood that are most common. I am going to show you here. This is a piece of cherry, this is dark cherry. Cherry also comes in a much lighter color. I happen to have this piece handy. To show you the grain in cherry. The next piece we use is very common for making furniture as mahogany. You will notice mahogany is an open grain wood. It bares some similarity to walnut. This is a piece of walnut and this i a piece of mahogany. Sometimes they can be confused. You can identify walnut because it has more pronounced black lines. An a slightly tighter grain then mahogany has. This is a piece of maple. Furniture is often made of maple. As you can see it is highly figured wood. When it is sanded out and finished it is really pretty. So what you want to do is determine what the wood veneer is. On the piece that you are going to patch. It might be something other then these four woods. In which cause you might need some professional help. In determining what the wood is.
