Tips for Building Your Vocabulary

Hey, there. We are talking about words and public speaking. Let's talk for just a minute about vocabulary, all right? And I'm going to, I'm going to give you a little assignment here, in a minute. Something that you need to do when you are working on a speech: build your vocabulary. It has a- it's pretty well been proven that as Americans and as humans, our vocabulary can- is starting to shrink a little bit. And you want to really continue to expand on your vocabulary. Come up with the words that you think you want to use. And then I want you to brainstorm and come up with more words. Or even go to your computer, or get a thesaurus, put in the word that you're thinking about using, and let the computer do the brainstorming for you. What are other words, that you can come up with, for that word. We should have extensive vocabularies. And you really want to use as many different words as you can when you're delivering a speech. One of the worst things that I see happen when people deliver speeches, is they use the same word over and over and over and over. That was an amazing experience, and it was really amazing to see all of those animals at the zoo. I mean, it was quite amazing how the kangaroos carried their babies around in their pouches. But what was even more amazing... Okay, see? I don't want to hear any more 'amazing'. I teach my students you can use a word like that once. Otherwise, you've got to brainstorm and expand your vocabulary.
