Kniphofia Exotic Flower Bulbs

A gorgeous South African plant for your garden is Red Hot Pokers. They are also called Kniphofia or Kniphofia whichever way that you want to pronounce it. I've come to the conclusion pronounced plants, the way people around you pronounce them and that way you sound like you know what you are doing. Somewhere in the world they are going to pronounce it differently than we do in America. So any way that you pronounce it is correct somewhere. Some people pronounce it Kniphofia because it was names after a gentleman named Kniphof but you can also call in Kniphofia or you can just go back to Red Hot Pokers. Red Hot Pokers are so easy to grow. They don't need any maintenance at all. They're a root that goes dormant in the winter so when I plant it, it's about 3 inches above the root. So we just stick these up straight or cover the whole thing sideways, it really doesn't matter. All that matters is the roots because they'll grow more and more eyes all the time. Hummingbirds love Red Hot Pokers so you cannot loose by planting Red Hot Pokers in your garden. They will have Hummingbirds in them all the time. In South Africa they have Sun birds that pollinate them. So I'm thrilled to know in America we have Humming birds. So plants adjust, animals adjust all over the continents. I'm always amazed about that in plants. They like full hot sun and lots of room to grown and their a plant that nobody messes with. Deer don't eat them, moles don't get them, they just grow and grow and grow. They have a little bit of a sharp edge on the foliage, so their great to make as a border or somewhere where you've got deer or dogs or kids running through, it kind of stops them. Red Hot Pokers are a great South African edition to your garden. In the next segment will talk about a great South African plant that goes really well with Red Hot Pokers, Naked Ladies.
