A South African collection of plants would not be complete without the Baboon flower, also known as Babiana. In South Africa the baboons actually dig up the bulb and eat them, just as we would eat walnuts or any other nut. They are just a beautiful plant and they are everywhere in South Africa. They are on the hillsides, they grow wild on the side of the roads, they are just everywhere! It is an easy plant to grow in America as well. The bulbs are simple and look like Hershey Kiss candy. The tip goes up, planted at about three inches deep in groups of at least three in a triangle pattern. They like to be crowded. They will grow and bloom in summer and they come in multiple colors. We sell a mixed variety, which gives you a little bit of everything; the hot pinks, the whites, and the yellows. They are just a beautiful addition to your South African garden. It would not be complete without the Babiana. I love it, it is cuter than not and it belongs in your South African garden. Next we will talk about Gladiolus Murielae.
