Playing Hammond Organ Rakes

In this clip, we're going to be taking about Organ Rakes. Which is, just those big nasty sounding things that you use as transitions or to come in or out of a phrase when you're playing organ. You hear a lot of people playing them. And, sometimes they're done really well. And, sometimes there not done as well as they could be. It's just a few simple things that you've got to do. So, let's say you want to use a Rake. Which, is just up to your A. You know, which is going to be the first note of your solo or whatever. The right, well there's a million different ways to do it. But, the way that I like to do it is to start up high go down low and then hang on the low for like a half a beat or so. And, think of it in terms of it's not just like something that you do without any rhythm to it. There's still going to be rhythm to it. So, it would be like one two three four. So, you know down on three up on four. And, one of the keys to making those Rakes sound gritty and dirty is to use more than. Make sure you're hitting more than one key at a time. If you're just, that sounds kind of lame. So, you want to use this part of your hand and just get three or four keys at a time. And, definitely try to get past the higher stuff first and hang down on the lower stuff. So, use it like this going down. Finger like this going down. And, then use kind of your knuckles going up. And, you've got your hand all the across it. One of things that is pretty cool about a Hammond is, it's got full polyphony. Which means, you can play at these keys at a time. And, when you play fifteen of them it's going to sound pretty dirty and pretty gross. But, in a cool way. So, you know that's going to give you some more drama and just some like coming into that. That solo or that part. Or, even just the intro into the song or whatever it is. That's one of those things you can only get with an organ. You do the Rakes with other instruments. But, you just get the grit out of it that you can't get with anything else.
