The fish that we are going to identify now is the White Margate. White Margates are related to the grunts, but are seen less commonly and are generally larger than most of the grunts. White Margates are generally a light gray to pearl colored with few, if any other body markings. The dorsal and tail fins are generally dark gray. White Margates also have a higher profile back compared to the more bullet shaped smaller grunts. The White Margate lacks the dark patch, seen behind the pectoral fin of the Black Margate. White Margates can reach a size of over two feet in length, but are most commonly seen as ten to twenty inch specimens. White Margates inhabit sandy areas or seagrass beds where they feed on small fishes and crustaceans. White Margates are usually quite shy and wary of divers. They can be very difficult to approach closely. White Margates most commonly travel alone but can be seen on occasions in small groups. That's the White Margate.
