Our bookend base is completely dry. Now, we're going to decoupage the napkin to the bookend base. You'll want to start by opening up your napkin. We're going to cut our napkin a little bit bigger than the base, the front of the base. Because we're going to be finishing this off with a ribbon trim, we only have to overlap the napkin about an 1/8 of an inch all the way around. Now this napkin has a little bit of an embossment on it and I'll just trim that off. Usually, if there's an embossment you don't need to trim it off because it'll get washed out with the gluing, with the decoupage glue. Since we have plenty of napkin and plenty of room to cut it off then we'll just trim that off. So, I'm going to make it just a little bit bigger. Now the napkin will stretch a little as you're working with it because the glue will make it expand a little bit. So, you don't want to make your overlap so big that when you're doing it it overlaps a lot, just a little bit like this. You can also trim it while you're gluing. As you see where it's coming, if you want to take off a little here and there, you can do that too. It's nice to get as close to the size that you want before you start. Now, I am going to separate the napkin. Napkins usually come in 2 or sometimes 3 ply. You just, at the corner, pull those layers apart. You can discard the white backing and you're left with a fairly sheer front that has the design on it. Now for the bookend, we're going to start at the corner of the base here and work our way out to the end because the napkin does stretch a little as you go. So, you want to start in the middle and work out. Then in the middle and work up.
