Saber Fencing Safety Equipment

Hi! I'm Mike Elder, head coach and general manager for the Miami Fencing Club; that's www.miamifencingclub.com. We meet weekday evenings in South Miami and Saturday afternoon at the Miami Day College. Fencing provides an excellent low impact aerobic workout for athletes from age 8 to 80. In case you don't know, fencing is an Olympic sport. It is the oldest of the Olympic sports. Last Olympics in Athens, United States brought back two gold medals, first time in a hundred years. All right, safety of course is a concern when you have any kind of sport that uses weapons like these. By the way, they are not sharp. Just playing like I could do this all afternoon and went and got myself but it is made out of very hard steel and you could hurt somebody. You need to take proper safety precautions. Jose, my partner here is wearing the standard fencing uniform. It is very heavy duty chevalier laced cloth here. It covers his whole body. The knickers here have extra padding on them in case of fence to his legs. I also have other safety equipment that will protect his head and the rest of his body which we will show you here in a moment. .
