The Bow Stretch Warm Up for Modern Dance

Hi there! My name is Connie Hale. Thanks for joining me here at expertvillage.com. What we are going to be working on here is some modern lyrical dancing. Some of the stretches are isolation, some extensions We are going to begin what is called a bow stretch. It is perfectly fine if you want to hold on to a chair for balance at this point. A bow stretch is simply grabbing your leg. We are going to expose my knee here for you so you can see. Actually I am going to be wrapping myself around my leg right here. You are going to see where I grab my leg up to the side. I am reaching up and underneath the leg. It will flip around in a mitt, take it wrap it, get our balance, find your focal spot and this here for balance and we reach our leg up and straighten and that is your bow stretch. Again, you can take it by just holding onto your ankle. For a little bit more of a beginner, grab onto your ankles if you are stretching your leg in the back, find your balance, pulling up with the body, balanced stomach is tight, arm is up; pretend you are pressing your arm against a wall for balance here. We slowly lift it up and here is your bow stretch. So that is two different ways; you can grab with a knee or you can grab it wrapped up around the ankle whatever you prefer. It's called the bow stretch. Other side, we take let's start with our ankle, we grab it, we find our focal spot, nothing is moving so you keep your balance. Stomach is tight, body is pulled up, arm is pressing, we lift it up with the ankle, bow stretch. So that is your basic bow stretch or extension.
