Hi there! My name is Connie Hale. Thanks for joining me here at expertvillage.com. Today we are learning some beginning modern and lyrical dancing. What I want to do first is go over a few stretches with you. Simple stretches; we are going to go ahead and sit down on the floor and stretch our legs out. Start with a simple butterfly stretch holding feet in, knees are down, press the knees down into the floor. The most important thing here is not how far you get your feet in but how close you get your knees to the ground. I suggest first putting your knees down and then slowly slide your feet in. We are going to lean forward leading with the chest and stretching out down as far as you can go. Leaning down and bring it back up. Let's take our feet forward, pointing the toes, bringing up and down, reaching and also with the feet flexed reaching up and down. I am going to do these movements very quickly. I want you to make sure you are holding each pose at least 30 seconds so that your muscles work and actually take on the stretch. We are going to go ahead and take it out to a beginner's split. Foot is pointed, other knee is in turning over, reaching over the foot, elongating the arm here. We are going to turn the other way wrapping around. We are going to switch the feet out, reaching over elongating the spine down and reaching over and twisting. Bring it in again, turn towards the leg and lower ourselves down stretching a different part of the body. Switch legs, turn toward the leg and stretch and up. All right. Those are some simple beginner's stretches for lyrical or modern dancing.
