Dietary Requirements & Conditioning for Competitive Fencing

Hi! I'm Mike Elder, the head coach and General Manager of the Miami Fencing Club; that's www.miamifencingclub.com. We meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in South Miami and Saturday afternoons at Miami Day College. Some people ask me what kind of diet does a competitor fencer need to follow. Well we always recommend a very low cal, high carbohydrate diet. Watch your intake of sugars; watch your intakes of salt. Try to keep yourself well hydrated at all times. I also recommend to people to avoid a lot of high heavy protein because I believe that it slows you down. Fencing requires the kind of stamina of a competition runner with sprinter so you want to maintain lean muscle mass at all times. A lot of people also ask what kind of exercises are good for fencing. You want to work on lower muscle structure, your lower body muscular, because that is where all the work gets down. Anything else you could do to improve your aerobic training is also recommended and will do you good at fencing or any other sport you decide to take up.
