Once you have your tops, it's time to start thinking about bottoms. When you're choosing fencing pants or fencing knickers, there's really one rule to remember, and that's that you have a regulation requirement, if you're fencing competitively, if you want to abide by the FIE, that you have to have four inches between the bottom of the jacket and the top of your--or, you have to have no more than four inches between the bottom of your jacket and the top of your pants when you are in an on guard. So, as you can see, I'm not wearing fencing knickers or pants at all, but that is the regulation that you need to check for. You can't wear sweats. Your pants need to be white. And if you get fencing knickers, you'll usually find there's added protection on the side side--on your weapon side, so that if you are a right-handed fencer, that would be different than as a left-handed fencer. You also have sometimes pockets and zippers in different places, so if you are a left-handed fencer, it's something you want to note. See if your resource has left-handed gear available, or, again, if you're ordering, just tell fencing.net that you're a left-handed fencer looking for knickers, if they have anything special to let you know. And that's about it. Again, when you're practicing, any sort of pants that offer you some sort of protection--shorts are usually not acceptable, and you do want your pants to go down to your socks to cover the entirety of your legs, just to help cushion you between any sharp, pointy objects that might find your legs.
