Maltese Christmas Traditions

Today we're talking about different Christmas celebrations from around the world. Well in Malta, the Christmas celebration, the tradition basically is centered on a crib; a crib for the baby Jesus. Every home has one. Just about every Christian home has one. And they range from homemade to store bought with different details. But the cribs essentially house a manger scene with figurines to represent Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, the oxen, all the animals as well as shepherds and angels and the Wise Men, and it's a very lovely tradition and every home has one. Midnight mass is the sort of climax of Christmas in Malta. They have a very celebratory service where lots of Christmas carols and a performance by a very lucky ten year old boy who gets to read the Nativity. I can imagine that it's one of the greatest honors to be chosen to be that ten year old boy. And it sounds like a very great place to spend Christmas in Malta.
