Peruvian Christmas Traditions

We are talking about different Christmas traditions from around the world. Now, in Peru Christmas is obviously a very big celebration. And one of the traditional things that they have there are called retablos. Which originated from back in the days when the priests would travel for festivals. Eventually they sort of evolved into these portable boxes, kind of like alters with saints above them and then the things underneath would depict just everyday life. And during Christmas time the depict Mary, Jesus and Joseph in a nativity scene. Christmas in Peru is very, very fun. It is a huge celebration. Most people attend midnight mass and then have these big feasts with traditional Peruvian food. And then the children get to open their presents sometime after midnight. You can imagine that in a country where there are so many Catholics and Christians that it really is one of the most special and important and celebratory days in the nation.
