What is Quantization in Music?

This is Jose Caban. Mac OSX, Reason and Cue Bass are registered trademarks with their respective companies and I am in no way affiliated with Apple, Propellerhead or Steinberg. You can hear that I didn't play it real well. You can hear that it's got kind of, it's a little bit off back and forth from what I played, so what I want to do is quantize. What quantize does is it takes what you play, that midi data, it reads wherever it's at, and it slides it over to the nearest point that you specified. So, even though I was supposed to be going ... Mine was kind of going.... I was a little bit off ok. I hit quantize and it's going to grab that midi data and just slide it over to where it needs to be, and it's perfect. But the thing is you have to watch it. They actually have a feature called humanize, believe it or not, that will mess it up a little bit because if you use quantize too much mark my words it's going to sound like a Nintendo song. Because, there's still that so perfect is too perfect with music and if you start quantizing things too much, it's going to sound like a machine made it instead a human made it. There's still that live aspect that of a band pulling themselves together listening to each other and there's that allowance of a little bit of sliding around so make sure that you do allow for that a little bit in your stuff.
