Starting Up a Drag Race Car

Hi, I'm Tina Stull, and I drive the top dragster for Interstate Batteries. On behalf of Expert Village, I want to talk to you a little bit about getting ready to go to the lanes. Now, last, you're ready to go, you hear the call, and what you're going to do is you're going to go ahead and power up. And remove the battery charger. As you can see, we've already removed the battery charger and so, now that we know we have a full charge on this, we're going to go back and we'll go ahead and turn the power on. So, here we're going to turn the power on. A lot of guys have a second switch in the cockpit. The reason that we have one back here is, in the event that something is going wrong, maybe after the burnout that your crew chief can come and they can knock off the power because conversation is a little difficult. But if he makes that call, they'll basically just kill you on the line. It's a good safety feature. The last thing I do when I get in the car is I take the tape off over the parachute. The simple reason that I just tape that and cover that up is just if we have people who are curious, especially kids, they'll reach in the car and they'll be curious what that button does, and we've had to pack the parachute out of the pit one too many times. So we just tape it.
