Shoes and Undergarments for Drag Racing

Hi, my name's Tina Stull, and I drive the top dragster for Interstate Batteries. On behalf of Expert Village, today I want to talk about the driver's equipment. Also, shoes are going to come in several different types. These are my newest pair that I like. I like the Velcro because I can adjust it real quick and easy, when I'm walking in the lanes I don't have to be completely strapped in to it, and in the last minute I can tighten them down to what's comfortable for me. But there are many different styles, low, and even ones that go a lot higher than these. And this again is for the Super Comp in the top dragster, in the super classes. A lot of the classes that are slower don't require them, but fires happen anywhere, and I think better safe than sorry. Another thing to consider is what you're wearing underneath these. If you're wearing an artificial nylon, spandex, if it has Lycra, any of those things in it, when it gets under heat, that will actually melt and that actually can increase your injury. So you want to just try to stay with a hundred percent cotton underneath your, as well as your driving suit, I just wear a plain T-shirt, because that's a hundred percent cotton, it makes things easy, and you know that that's your best protection. You can go to a Nomex, and they make Nomex undershirts. Just like they found out in Iraq, with the guys over there in the extreme heat and with fire, that a lot of that wicking fabric that people like to wear to whip, that can cause severe burns as well, so just a little bit of precaution.
