Hand Development for Drummers

Now that you know how to hold the sticks correctly, and hopefully you've practiced it a bunch and are feeling comfortable with the sticks in your hands and how to strike the pad correctly, we're going to start developing your hands. It's very important that you get good with your hands and your sticks, once again, to get good on the drum set. The first exercises I want you to practice are doing four strokes with each hand. One, two, three, four, and then the other hand, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. And I want you to try to keep your stick height the same throughout, nothing weird like this. Just right here, no more than about eight inches over the top of the drum. Four with each hand. The next set will be three with each hand. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three. You do these over and over and over again. Try to do each one, four rights, four lefts for a minute or two minutes and then three rights, three lefts for another couple of minutes. Always hitting right in the center of the pad, keeping your stick height exactly the same, both sticks. And after you do those, you can go to two sets of four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. And then sets of three and three with the other ones. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three.
