In this segment, we're going to use a pillow. It seems a little strange, but this is why. On the pad, the snare drum, or on a practice pad, the sticks want to bounce freely. On a pillow, they don't. So what it does is it makes it more difficult to play, and it forces you to use your wrist more. And it's going to strengthen your wrist if you practice on a pillow for a while, regularly each day. Now, we can do single strokes; we can do double strokes. And notice how the pillow just sucks the stick down into it, and it forces you to bring it up yourself, there's no help. What you're doing is you're strengthening your wrists and, as you try to get faster and faster, you don't have any help, you have to do it yourself. You have to use that wrist and make it go two times and learn how to do that quickly. And it doesn't matter if you're using match grip or traditional grip. It sounds like I'm doing a drum roll. Almost. But I'm just hitting twice with each stick, no bounce. This is what I want you to do every day, for at least five or ten minutes on a pillow. Single and double strokes.
