Drum Head Striking Tips

This segment, we're going to discuss how to hit the drum. Now, you might think, "Well, is there a right and a wrong way to hit a drum?" Yes and no. If you want a nice, clean sound, you're going to make sure that the stick hits the center of the drum head and is allowed to bounce up immediately. Now, as a beginner, you may find yourself digging, like that. You really want to avoid that. Obviously, it doesn't sound very good. So, it's very important when you practice, once you get comfortable holding the sticks correctly maybe just maybe with one hand, one stick. Just striking the drum correctly, like this. Notice my wrist. I've got my hand turned with the top of my hand facing up, not my thumb. The thumb facing up is in another grip that we haven't talked about yet called the French grip. But we'll get to that later. So, for now, strike the drum like this, allowing the stick to bounce up immediately.
