Learn the Acoustic Verse of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends"

Today we're going to take a look at Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends." We're going to look at every part in every segment, chain them together, and take a listen. We're going to start with the acoustic intro that goes into the verse. Let's take a look. Now we'll start off the riff with the ring finger on the fifth fret of the D string. We're going to leave the G string open and put our index finger on the third fret of the B string. We're going to hit those three in a row, like this. That's basically the introduction. Then we begin the verse. In the verse, we walk down this lowest note, it sounds like this. Down to the fourth fret of the D string with our middle finger. Where our index finger is, we're going to put our middle finger there, and take our index finger and put it on the second fret of the D string. Hit those three same strings in a row. Then release your index finger, hit the same three strings. Then we're going to come up to a C major, barred on the third fret. Take our index finger, bar across the entire third fret, middle finger on the fifth fret of the D string, ring finger on the fifth fret of the G string, and pinkie on the fifth fret of the B string. We're going to modify this into a minor chord form. We're going to put our middle finger on the fourth fret of the B string, ring finger on the fifth fret of the D string, and pinkie on the fifth fret of the G string. Then we're going to come down and play a G five chord, which is our middle finger on the third fret. With that same middle finger, we're going to mute out the A string so it doesn't ring out, open D, open G, ring finger on the third fret of the B string, and pinkie on the third fret of the high E string. All together, the intro and the verse sounds like this. You'll do that series of riffs over each consecutive verse and in the next segment we're going to talk about the chorus. Still on the acoustic guitar but it's a different chord progression. I'll see you there.
