Teach Your Beagle to Come When You Call With These Dog Obedience Training Tips

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and it’s the time to talk about Beagles. And now, we want to teach a beagle how to come. We have Mr. Bailey here and Bailey is over here playing with the toy. Now, this is not the time to tell him to come because he’s very intent on what he is doing, I’m just setting him to failed. Remember, you don’t want to give commands when you’re unsure that your dog is not going to respond. So, what I need to do is get his attention. I’m not even going to say his name at this point, because he’s really into that hedgehog. Good, come, good, excellent, that’s exactly what you want to see, get his attention in some neutral way that it doesn’t matter so much if he doesn’t pay attention to you. Then when he makes eye contact, reward him and then when he starts coming, reward him, oh! no, also reward him, come, good, with the hedgehog, grab another treat, Bailey, good, come, good, good. That was a really good example of being patient. Now a lot of people would want to keep telling the dog to come and come and come, what I needed to do is make myself more interesting than the hedgehog. This also tells me that it might be a really good idea to use the hedgehog instead of food as a reward, because I had to go back to using a lure there, had a tiny piece of food in my hand. I’m going to get him to drop the hedgehog and then start over, drop, good. So by the way, what I’m doing there is saying drop right when he opens his mouth to get the treat for the hedgehog. Come, good. So again Mr. Bailey the beagle has shown that there are many ways to reward and many ways just to work on giving commands. So, hopefully, your beagle will learn how to come as well, as Bailey.
