How to Teach Your Beagle to Lay Down Using These Dog Obedience Training Tips

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and it’s the time to talk about beagles. And we’re working on Bailey the beagle learning how to lie down. Now, in the sit section, we have Bailey offering us a lot of behaviors, right when I brought up the food. So we’re kind of using serendipity in dog training here. I’m going to see, if he offers the down and when he does I will say it as he is doing it and mark it. Now, this may not be the technique that works for your dogs. So, if doesn’t work for your beagle, then just check out one of the breed videos… other breed videos. Bailey, good, now I’m going to just be patient, may be giving him a little body language, may be a little… almost there. Alright, we’re not getting a down offered as much as we were to sit. Now, I could wait a little bit longer, but for the sake of time, I’m going to go ahead and give him a signal. Sit, down, good, excellent, okay, sit. Now, that was not an appropriate behavior, I’ll let him figure out what the right one is. He needs a little help, down, good. So we’re not quite where we were with the sit with the down, okay. Bailey good, down, good. But he… remember I do not want to reinforce him when he pops up like that that’s really what we need to work on, down, good. Again I’m going to bring the treat in lower to keep him from jumping up. Okay, and I want to release before he gets up. There I’m going to move in to him and not let him invade my space showing that he doesn’t get any response for that jumping, little puppy. Now I do not want to tell Bailey anything right now, because he has gotten distracted by a toy on the couch, instead I let him know I have got some food, sit, little help, oh! the toy is still distracting. So I’ll use the toy, sit, up, sit, down, good, okay. So Mr. Bailey the beagle here has shown us how we can use myriad of methods training a dog how to sit and how to lie down. This beagle is offering behaviors, he’s responding to hand signals, to body language. So, we can use a variety of things, we found that we can also use a toy as well as treats to reward. So, Mr. Bailey the beagle has really helped us learned how to sit and lie down.
