Teaching a Daschund to Sit Using Dog Obedience & Training

Hi! I'm Melanie McElroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. Today we are working with dachshunds. Now I would like to talk about daschunds and sitting. Now with a lot of daschund, it's not even a good idea to try to teach a sit because it is difficult for them with their long body. There are a couple of different ways daschund will sit or try to sit. Check out what your dog does naturally before you decide what you want the sit to look like. Sometimes it is a crouch to the ground and the back is straight and sometimes the dog will swing her back leg under and sit over on her hip. Which ever one your dog does naturally, is what you should expect them to do when you give them a command. Miss Bella here is looking everywhere for the treat which I have in my hand. I am going to use the food as a lure, she's thinking about it, she moved her head up, sit, good! That was actually a pretty darn good sit for a dachshund but did you notice that at first she just put her rear end towards the ground and I waited until it was closer and her muscles relaxed before I marked that she had done the right thing. Once again, she is faking. No cheating. That's closer. Okay! But I want her to do it on command. Sit, good! I hope you can see the difference on the video. It's not when she's all tense and her bottom is hovering, it's when it's all the way down. That's a pretty funny sit Bella. Okay. Sit, good! Now Bella definitely needs some work on stay but we are getting okay a little bit longer, longer sit which isn't bad. So if you dachshund is having any trouble sitting or he or she doesn't sit naturally at any time, check with your veterinarian before you pursue to get your daschund to sit.
