Counting in a Press Drum Roll

During a drum roll, you've got to understand how to play it in time with whatever song or music you're playing. A roll can't just be thrown in, it's got to be in time with the music. So, it's very important to be able to count the roll. Assuming you already know how to read and count music, you want to start the press roll or any roll really, but we're going to use the press roll. What we're going to do is, we're going to slow it way down and we're going to say, one and two and one and two and one and two and so forth. So you can do this slowly; you don't have to get very fast right now. Just learn to say, one and two and one and two and after you do that I want you to say, one E and A, which you'll know from 16th strokes, how to say one E and A two E and A three E and A four E and A. So you're going to count 8th notes and you're going to count 16th notes. One E and A two E and A, one E and A two E and A, one E and A two E and A, one E and A two E and A. As you get better at counting, you can leave off all the other notes and just say like the quarter notes; one, two, one, two. One E and A two E and A, one, two, one, two. One and two and one and two and one, two, one two.
